Mr Glyn Evans is a Knee Surgeon based in Central London who treats young adults with sports related knee injuries and older patients with early wear and tear, or established arthritis of the knee. Glyn qualified in Cardiff in 1975 and then trained in Liverpool and Edinburgh. He was appointed to the Academic Orthopaedic Unit, Southampton, as a Lecturer in 1984 with a major interest in external fixation of tibial fractures. He became an NHS Consultant in 1990 and worked at St Mary's Hospital, Isle of Wight, Treloar Hospital, Alton and more recently Royal Hospital Haslar, Gosport.
Glyn has been performing knee arthroscopies and knee replacements since 1985. During his first decade as a consultant he did several thousand joint replacements including hips and knees and developed an early interest in partial knee replacements using the Oxford knee. In 2004 Glyn decided to concentrate solely on the investigation and treatment of knee disorders and became a Director of London Knee Clinic at London Bridge Hospital. Since then he has performed between 250 and 300 knee operations per year including ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstructions, partial / total knee replacements and correction of bony deformities (osteotomies).
Research interests
Glyn has had a major interest in gait analysis with a particular emphasis on knee movements for the last few years. He has been involved in collaborative studies with European Technology for Business Ltd (ETB) and the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering (BIME) sponsored by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) including a study of knee movements using an Inertia Measuring Device. This resulted in a paper published by London Knee Clinic at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering Conference on Knee Arthroplasty 2009 - Measurement of Knee Joint Angles using an Inertia Measuring Unit and its use Clinically as an Outcome Measure (IMECH Abstract).
Before taking a full-time interest in knee problems Mr Evans published several leading articles in the British Medical Journal on various topics including repetitive strain injury and microdiscectomy in the lumbar spine. He has published a number of peer reviewed articles on subjects including Keinbock's disease of the wrist, fixation of hip fractures and the treatment of osteoporotic fractures.
He has published an academic paper on External Fixation of Tibial Fractures, has authored a section on Fracture Healing in a textbook of Biology and has published a joint paper on Stress Fractures of the Tibia in children.
Glyn has undertaken research on the Economics of Autologous Blood Transfusion in Knee Replacement Surgery jointly with members of the Economics Faculty of the University of Portsmouth the findings of which were published in the Economics press.
Mr Evans has been involved in research on the effectiveness of Hyaluronan injections in osteoarthritis of the knee and has presented papers on this topic at international clinical meetings and has published on this topic in the medical literature.
He is currently involved in a multi-centre study on Autologous Cartilage Cell Implants in which cartilage cells are removed from the knee, grown in the laboratory into a sheet of cells and then re-implanted.
He has current interests in minimal blood loss tourniquet free surgery for joint replacement at the knee and in the use of computer navigation in knee surgery.
